“Hey Mom, I’m really full. Can I have a rice krispy treat now?”
Me, “No, dude, I’m sorry. You need to eat your veggies”.
Oren, “But, mom, veggies just taste like veggies.”
“I know dude, but you have to eat them. You cannot have a treat until they are gone”
“Wull, how bout I just agree to eat them when I’m older?”
I know that my son desperately needs veggies, and because of his food allergy restrictions, it becomes even more important that he have them. But, the ones he likes he can’t have and that leaves all the ones he loathes.
Although I have never loathed it, I sometimes feel the same way about Bible reading. “But, reading my Bible tastes just like reading my Bible”…. “How bout I just agree to eat it when I’m older?”
Sometimes, it’s just mundane and to be honest- a little boring, I just don’t like what it says, or I just have a hard time finding time to fit it in.
It’s easy for me to eat the parts I like, you know, the parts where God says that he has a plan, a future and a hope, (Jer 29:11) but I don’t really want to eat the part where in the same breath said, “Hey, sorry, you’re gonna suffer for 70 years”. (vs 1-10). It’s hard for me to hear to love my enemies (Matt. 5:43-48) or to seek peace (Matt. 5:9, James 3:18), because truthfully, I’d rather be on a smear campaign.
The problem with waiting til I get older or reading only the parts I like, is that I, like Oren, will become very nutrient deficient. And while, I know this, I also know that someday I want to be labeled as a strong woman of God.
Strong women of God grow strong because they have a build up of rich nutrient dense variety in their diet. They ate their veggies consistently even when they just tasted like veggies.
Strong women of God know that eating veggies now which results in better health tomorrow and the next day and the day after that…which results in a healthy lifestyle of veggie eating.
Strong women of God live in a way that reflects God in all aspects and not just in the ones in which they like. They let God challenge their soul–because He knows better and He is the only physician who can give a clean bill of health.
I guess its time to pick up the fork and eat, today, not wait til I’m older tomorrow.
John 6:27 “Don’t waste your energy striving for perishable food like that. Work for the food that sticks with you, food that nourishes your lasting life, food the Son of Man provides. He and what he does are guaranteed by God the Father to last.”
What veggies are you missing out on lately?
